From horror writer Geoff Gander:

A Test of Loyalty (Mechanicsville #1)
by Laurie Stewart (Goodreads Author)

read in October, 2015
This is a gritty, but hopeful, look at roughly one month in the lives of three teenagers (Sam, Ash, and Faraj), each of whom stands at a crossroads in their lives and must make decisions that could very well determine how their own futures will play out. I will not go into detail about each character’s challenges, but suffice it to say that Ms. Stewart explores such themes as racism, drugs, violence, and the struggle to maintain a family, and weaves each one into a fast-paced narrative.

Overall “A Test of Loyalty” was a quick read, and Ms. Stewart shifted perspective between the three characters very smoothly. I especially appreciated her approach of describing the same scene through the eyes of the different characters, as it gave me a better sense of the each person’s mindset. At the same time this was done only at appropriate scenes, so it is not overused.

This book is the first of a trilogy. I look forward to the next installment.
